3M Label Materials Guide

Let Tekra help simplify the process of selecting the right material for your label project

Navigating through the vast number of available 3M™ Durable Label Materials can be a daunting task! But it doesn’t have to be. We’ve put together a guide to help you understand the most important aspects to consider when selecting your label material, which is sometimes called label stock. Of course, you can always contact Tekra and we can help you. We have more than 30 years experience working with 3M and have extensive knowledge of 3M’s materials.

Before getting started, it’s important to understand what the expectation and function of the label. The surface the label is applied to will also significantly affect product choice. Take into consideration if the label will be applied under any unusual circumstances including extreme temperature and exposure to chemicals.

Permanent, Removable and Repositionable Labels

Next, consider the requirements for the adhesive. Will the label need to be removable, permanent, or maybe even repositionable? If the label is intended to be removable, determine how long will the label need to last before being removed. 3M offers a wide range of removable, permanent and repositionable label stock materials.

Labels for Curved Surfaces

The shape and surface conditions the label is being applied will also impact label material choice. For instance, curved surfaces will require a conformable label material such as vinyl to smoothly cover the surface and to avoid any edge lifting. Surface roughness should also be taken into consideration. A heavier adhesive weight would be a better choice for rough surfaces since more adhesive will be needed to flow in between the peaks and valleys creating a suitable environment to ensure an effective bond.

Understanding Printing Method

Finally, printing method plays a major factor in label material choice. Many labels have been coated with a special topcoat layer that enables print receptivity. Understanding how the label will be printed will help narrow down appropriate choices. Once you have a better understanding and appreciation for a label’s construction, use 3M’s label selector to receive specific recommendations for your application.
